Chapter 24

Ali’s eyes popped when she told him about the excursion to the winery. “Joseph Mazzanti is, like, the hottest boy in year 11,” she said, and Kai frowned. “Show me the photo!”

Kai took out his phone. It was not a great shot, but the caption stood out clearly enough.

“It’s too much of a coincidence,” she declared. “That has to be the man!”

Kai agreed. The woman’s reaction to the photo seemed to confirm it. Giorgio was linked to the Mazzanti family. Maybe he had betrayed them to the Nazis! He thought he’d gotten far away from his past, but he’d ended up in the same part of the world as the people who knew what he’d done.

“I’m going to look in that barn tonight,” he said. “It’s not too far to ride there, I should be able to spend a couple of hours looking and get back before morning.”

“I’m coming too!” said Ali.

Kai shook his head. “No way! That barn could collapse, or we could get caught. I don’t want to have to explain to your dad either way.”

“Well I’m glad my safety is your main concern,” she said sarcastically.

“Of course it is, I just meant…” Kai said helplessly. He’d managed to sound both thoughtless and wimpy. Well done idiot!

Ali looked at him with narrow eyes. “You know I read somewhere that guys automatically say other stuff to cover up their true feelings.”

Kai felt himself go red. What did she want him to say? She looked smug. “So I’m going to assume that you do really care about me.”

He couldn’t work out what the expression on her face was: challenging, cheeky, or hopeful? Maybe a bit of all three.

He took her hand and looked into her eyes. Hopeful, yes, he could see it now.

“Meeting you has been the coolest thing that’s happened to me here,” he said, “and I’m scared - for both of us - but mostly for you. I know you’re tough, but I still feel responsible for you. I got you into this.”

She squeezed his hand. “That’s better. And I’m going with you, with my eyes wide open. This is our best chance to find out the truth. I have to come.”

Her phone suddenly buzzed, and Kai felt himself come back to earth with a thud.

“Sure Mum, I’ll be home in 10 minutes,” Ali was saying.

She stood up and pulled at his curls. “Message me with the plan,” she said, getting on her bike and putting on her helmet.

Kai shook his head and couldn’t stop the grin that threatened to split his face.

He was going to solve the mystery and get the girl. Life couldn’t get any better.
